At We Keep It Fresh, we are a non -profit organization that addresses the issue of food deserts in Mississippi and the Gulf Coast areas. We want to provide food access and education for families and individuals. This education component consists of a grass-root education to inform people about the food process, opportunities, and emphasize the importance of access to food. We not only provide a service, but educate at the same time.
Nationally, there is food that is being wasted on the daily basis. According to ReFEd, a nonprofit that eliminates food waste. Food wastes cost $218 billion.
In Mississippi, the food insecurity gap costs about $274,731,000. For Jackson County, that gap is $13,100,000.
In Alabama, a third of children in rural Alabama have food insecurity problems. The state has the fourth-largest rate of poverty in the country. That can cause children not to have healthy and productive minds. The State of Alabama has a gap in food security of $423,475,000. In Mobile County, this results in $36,293,000 that is needed to fill in the gap. In Mobile, there was a 700 percent increase in assistance.
We Keep It Fresh wants to add to the fabric of fighting hunger and educating people
Access to food is important for the following reasons:
